The recent shutdown of the HomeSafeID microchip registry in Australia has left thousands of pets at risk of becoming untraceable if lost. Microchip registration is essential for reuniting lost pets with their families, but if a pet was previously registered with HomeSafeID, that record may no longer be accessible.

Fortunately, there are simple actions you can take to check if your pet’s microchip is still linked to a valid registry and, if necessary, update it with a new provider.
There are over 10,000 pets in the Vedi network alone that are registered with HomeSafeID. So we're here to help make the re-registration process as seamless as possible.
If you’re a pet parent:
If your pet is registered with HomeSafeID, follow these steps to verify and update their registration:
1. Check your pet's microchip status
Visit www.petaddress.com.au and enter your pet’s microchip number to see where it is registered.
If you’re unsure of the microchip number, check your pet’s Vedi Vaccination Certificate or ask your vet.
The microchip number (ID) can be found on a Vedi Vaccination Certificate.
2. Re-register your pet if needed
If HomeSafeID was the listed provider, your pet’s microchip is no longer linked to an active database. You will need to re-register with an alternative provider. We recommend: Central Animal Records and Global Micro Animal Registry
These registries ensure your pet can be identified if they are lost and scanned.
A small fee of around $10-20 may apply.
3. Contact your vet for assistance
Many veterinary clinics have systems in place to check and assist with re-registering pets quickly.
Ask your vet if they use Vedi, a tool that instantly flags unregistered microchips and allows for quick re-registration.
4. Spread the word
Many pet parents are unaware of this issue. Share this post with fellow pet owners and encourage them to check their pet’s microchip status.
If you’re a veterinary professional:
Veterinary practices play a crucial role in ensuring pets remain traceable. Here’s how you can help:
1. Inform pet owners
Print out a notice for your clinic, send an email, or share a social media post alerting pet owners about the HomeSafeID shutdown.
Example message: "The HomeSafeID microchip registry has shut down. If your pet was registered with them, their microchip may no longer be traceable if lost. Check their status at www.petaddress.com.au and re-register if necessary. Our clinic can assist."
2. Identify affected pets with Vedi
For existing patients: Vedi will flag any HomeSafeID pets in your practice so you can inform their owners of the need to re-register. There are 10,000 pets on our system with microchips registered with HomeSafeID, so your practice will likely have several pets that are affected.
For new pet patients: Vedi will notify you instantly if a pet’s microchip is registered with HomeSafeID on arrival to your clinic. Once they're scanned in, Vedi flags them in the system so that you are aware of the need to re-register them.
Coming soon in March 2025, you can use Vedi to quickly re-register pets from HomeSafeID to another registry.
Using Vedi’s microchip registration module, you can re-register the pet’s microchip in under 30 seconds. We pre-fill all the information for you and send it to one of our partner registries; you and your client will then receive instant verification.
This reduces the risk of unregistered pets and ensures lost animals can find their way home.
To start using this in your practice as soon as it’s available, let us know.
5. Encourage proactive checks
When scanning a pet for any reason (routine check-ups, vaccinations, etc.), take a moment to verify their microchip registration and inform the owner if action is needed.
Our microchip registration module makes it easy to do so - as soon as you scan the pet in with Vedi, you'll get a notification if their registration is missing or inactive.
Together, we can keep our pets safe and protected.
